Because your bathroom is custom-designed to suit your space and your family’s individual needs, the final price can vary greatly. There are a number of choices and circumstances that will affect the cost of your bathroom renovation including the scope of the project (how large is the space being renovated, will building work be required, is a DA required etc…), will you do a full renovation or just a makeover (a full renovation allows you to improve functionality as well as appearance), and what is your reason for undertaking the bathroom renovation (are you preparing your home for sale or investing in your future lifestyle?).
Your choice of fittings and fixtures can also significantly impact the cost of your bathroom renovation – a custom-made vanity, for example, will be far more expensive than a store-bought unit but may provide you with an individualised storage solution for your family. The best way to manage your budget is to ask for expert advice from your bathroom designer – they will be able to guide you on where best to invest your money and where to make savings.
Absolutely we can include your own design ideas – it’s your space, after all. What we suggest is you compile a scrapbook – either online or in print format – that will give us an idea of the style, theme and colour schemes you like. Don’t worry at this stage if it doesn’t all match – the point is to give us some guidance around what you like (and also what you don’t like). Sometimes a bathroom is designed around a key feature, such as a freestanding bath, if a client has fallen in love with a specific product. At other times, a bathroom is designed around a style or theme – maybe to suit the style of the home. Or the bathroom can be designed around a specific colour scheme the client wishes to emulate.
When starting your bathroom design, we take into consideration the size of the space, the size of your family, and who will be using the bathroom as well as all your design ideas. When then apply our years of experience and expert knowledge to create a room that’s ideally suited to your specific requirements.
The obvious challenge with a small bathroom renovation is the compact space. But, in the hands of a qualified, specialist designer, a small bathroom can be transformed and every available centimetre utilised. We find sticking to a single style works best for a small bathroom as that allows us to create a cohesive design scheme throughout and provide a more visually appealing end result. There are many visual “tricks” that can be employed in the design of the bathroom to make the room appear larger, and give it a lighter, brighter appeal. Pops of colour work really well in a small bathroom to draw the eye to a specific part of the room.
Storage solutions and being clever about placement of fittings and fixtures is really they key to small bathroom renovation success. Make a list of all the items you need to store in the bathroom and your designer will be able to create special storage areas in the location best suited to their use.
In general, every bathroom renovation will follow the same steps. What tends to change is the length of time of each step and that will very much depend on the specifics of the renovation. A bathroom renovation will always start with the design process. Once the design concept is approved, construction plans will be drawn up. These will include a floor plan (including lighting and electrical plans) and elevations for each section. The plans are the detailed blueprints followed by the builders to ensure the end result is exactly as designed.
The old bathroom will need to be removed and the walls and floor prepared for the new materials. This may include moving, removing or creating new walls depending on the plans. Following this, the plumber and electrician will do their initial work to prep the room and the carpenter will start on their jobs. Next comes the waterproofing stage – a pre-check is carried out and then two coats of waterproofing will be applied with some drying time in between.
After this, the tiler can start to lay the wall and floor tiles, plus any feature tiles chosen. The carpenter will continue with their jobs including fitting the vanity. Once this is done, the plumber and electrician will finish and the carpenter will fit any remaining trims etc… This means the room is now ready for the painter. A final, full clean will be done before the job is complete.
An “average” bathroom renovation will take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to complete. We tend to find a full, custom renovation takes closer to 6 weeks to ensure the job is completed to the highest workmanship standards. If extra building work is required this will add to the timeframe. A larger space can take longer and smaller bathroom can sometimes be completed in less time but the same basic steps still need to be followed. At Brindabella, we provide all our clients with a detailed schedule of works so you know exactly what is happening at every point of your renovation. If anything changes, we advise you immediately.
We understand the bathroom renovation process can be very stressful so we do all we can to keep our clients informed at every stage of the process. You will need to be prepared for early arrival of tradespeople so we’ll need access to the room being renovated as well as a clear traffic path from the front door. We’ll organise for various fittings and fixtures to be delivered on site so some storage may be required – some items we will bring with us on the day/s they are required.
We will need for the room to be undisturbed overnight so you will need to ensure children and pets cannot access the room. If it’s in an open plan space, we will organise for barriers to be erected or for that part of the house to be closed off for safety. We may sometimes need to turn off the water or electricity but, if this is the case, you will be given plenty of notice so you can plan ahead.
At Brindabella, we provide a full service for every home or bathroom renovation we undertake. This means you have one point of contact for every project. The site manager is the best person to chat to if you have questions about the work being undertaken or about any of our tradespeople attending your site. Our office staff are the best people to contact with any accounts or scheduling queries or if you need to organise for any deliveries. You’ll be given the direct mobile phone number of the main person overseeing your project and you will also be able to contact us via the office phone number or our emails. We encourage you to talk to us throughout the renovation process – we know it’s stressful but we’ve been doing this for more than 30 years and we’re happy to share our knowledge and expertise with you.
We’re not going to lie – a renovation will cause some upheaval in the household. Your morning routine will most likely be interrupted by the arrival of tradespeople and the commencement of (sometimes noisy) work. There will be some dust, although our tradespeople clean up every day before they leave your home. There may be areas of your home which are unusable during the renovation meaning other rooms (like spare bathrooms) might be used more often.
If undertaking a larger renovation, some clients do find it more convenient to move out for a couple of weeks and simply give us a key.
But, remember, it really is a short space of time to put up with a small amount of inconvenience for an end result that will transform your lifestyle.
